# Menu System

The menu system loads UI overlays at runtime.

Each menu is HTML plus optional JavaScript. Menus mount into `#dAll` or `#dSurface`.

### Menu assets

Store menu markup here:

* `menu/html/<menuId>.html`

Store menu logic here:

* `menu/js/<menuId>.js` (optional)

`<menuId>` is the identifier you pass to `LoadMenu`.

### Where menus render

Menus default to `#dAll`. If `#dSurface` exists and is visible, it is used.

This lets the game swap menu layers without changing your call sites.

### Stacking and state

Menus are full-screen `div`s with `position: absolute`. Each menu gets a higher `z-index` than the last one.

State lives in these globals:

* [`visibleMenus`](/engine/reference/menus.js/visiblemenus.md)
* [`menusAmount`](/engine/reference/menus.js/menusamount.md)

DOM discovery uses:

* [`getDAll`](/engine/reference/menus.js/getdall.md)

### Core API

Use these three operations most of the time:

* [`PreloadMenu`](/engine/reference/menus.js/primary-operations/preloadmenu.md)
* [`LoadMenu`](/engine/reference/menus.js/primary-operations/loadmenu.md)
* [`UnloadMenu`](/engine/reference/menus.js/primary-operations/unloadmenu.md)

Read the flow guide in [Primary Operations](/engine/reference/menus.js/primary-operations.md).

{% hint style="warning" %}
`LoadMenu` runs menu scripts using `new Function(...)`. Only load trusted menu JS.
{% endhint %}

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://docs.pvzm.net/engine/reference/menus.js.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
